A clean, quiet drivetrain

Understand a complete cleaning routine for a chain using drip oil.

02 / 04
Identify your equipment first

Before any hands-on chain care, identify motor assistance and follow the exact bike manufacturer’s preparation and isolation instructions. This lesson does not provide a powered-bike procedure.

THE WORKBENCH
Preparing the component…

Link plates. Pairs of inner and outer plates connect the rollers. Inspect for damage.

Original teaching model · simplified geometry, not a manufacturer service model. Clearances may be enlarged.

STEP 1 OF 5

Confirm the routine fits

This is a learning example. Before performing it, confirm a chain drive, drip-oil treatment and an unassisted bicycle in My bike. Do not apply this oil routine to a waxed chain or belt.

Look for damaged plates, cracks, stiff links or unexpected skipping. A damaged chain needs assessment; extra lubricant cannot repair it. Leave a joining link closed for this routine.

WHAT YOU’RE CHECKING

You know the chain treatment and have ruled out visible damage before routine cleaning.

Tools & scope
  • Clean lint-free cloths
  • Soft brush
  • Chain-compatible cleaner
  • Bicycle drip-chain lubricant

A drip-oil chain routine. Wax, belt drives and powered-bike preparation need their own instructions. The model is a generic chain, not a quick-link installation guide.

01 · Confirm the routine fits

This is a learning example. Before performing it, confirm a chain drive, drip-oil treatment and an unassisted bicycle in My bike. Do not apply this oil routine to a waxed chain or belt.

Look for damaged plates, cracks, stiff links or unexpected skipping. A damaged chain needs assessment; extra lubricant cannot repair it. Leave a joining link closed for this routine.

What you’re checking: You know the chain treatment and have ruled out visible damage before routine cleaning.

02 · Prepare the drivetrain

Support the bicycle securely. Keep fingers, loose clothing and cloths away from the chainrings, pulley wheels and other pinch points.

Keep cleaner and lubricant away from every brake surface. Use a controlled application, not a spray across the drivetrain. Do not use a pressure washer.

What you’re checking: The bike is stable, electronics are prepared appropriately and braking surfaces are protected.

03 · Clean, then let it dry

Remove surface dirt with a cloth and soft brush. Use a cleaner approved for your chain, following its label; Shimano warns against acidic or alkaline solvents such as rust cleaners.

Finish cleaning and any required rinsing according to the product instructions, then let the chain dry. Work with the chain stopped when brushing near pinch points. Inspect again now that the dirt is gone.

What you’re checking: The chain is clean and dry; no damage was hidden by the dirt.

04 · Aim for the rollers

Select the rollers in the model: these are the round parts between the plates. Apply drip lubricant to the rollers according to its directions, working along the lower run.

Move the chain slowly by hand-turning the crank only when your hands, cloth and applicator are clear, then stop to apply to the next section. Cover the chain once. Never use a motor to move it for cleaning or lubrication.

What you’re checking: Lubricant reaches the rollers; the brake and tyre surfaces remain clean.

05 · Remove the excess and check

Allow the penetration or setting time specified on the lubricant. Wipe the outside of the chain with a clean cloth, keeping it away from pinch points. The outer surfaces do not need to stay wet.

Restore any removed battery according to its manual after the system is dry. Confirm normal operation with hands clear. If the chain still skips or binds, investigate the cause rather than adding more lubricant.

What you’re checking: No excess oil outside the chain, no brake contamination, and no unresolved operating fault.
